Project Vision

To enable sustainable forest management in Assam through multi scale integrative planning involving participation of local population.

Statement of the Problem

In Assam, the forest area and forest cover are under anthropogenic stress. The dependence of the rural population on forests, besides poverty and unemployment amongst forest dependent communities lead to over exploitation of the forest resources. The Forest Department has been making concerted efforts to address these problems. However, major constraints in the process are inadequate institutional capacity, insufficient financial resources, mounting challenges of inadequate economic opportunities and incentives for people to engage in non forest activities.

Aims of the Project

With the support of Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the GOA has undertaken the APFBC with specific objective to restore forest ecosystems in collaboration with the forest dependent communities, to enhance their livelihoods and ensure conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. To achieve this, the project has activities centered around four main technical components and one component for project management.
